Slow Coolant leak update.

Well, my post 16817 on 12/20/01;

http://www.escribe.com/automotive/european/tsn/m24855.html

about my slow coolant leak was not the end of the story. After a few days,
the leak was back again. The folks at the Saab dealer were surprised, but
they offered me a free loaner (an '02 9-3!) and took another crack at it.
This time they found a leak around the hose, and a small pinhole in the
radiator. The Saab dealer did not charge me for the service. I got my car
back--and it was still leaking coolant!

Once more back to the dealer. After about 3 days, they decided it was a
leaky head gasket. It has been replaced. No leak for about 6 days now, so I
think they have fixed it. The folks at Schmelz Countryside Saab in
Maplewood, MN were very helpful, especially manager Rick Sears. He
negotiated with Saab to cover a significant amount of my expenses, so my
out-of-pocket costs were very reasonable. Kudos!

A few comments about the '02 9-3 SE with automatic transmission. The
powerplant is excellent (HOT engine?) and the handling with traction control
was very good on snowy roads. I am still a stick driver, but the automatic
transmission was very responsive. The cupholder in the dash seems like a
terrible idea. Putting liquids next to a score of buttons does not seem like
a good move. I also missed the analog clock, which seems classier than the
digital clock on the SID. And do I really need to know the date when I am
driving? Otherwise, the experience was very much like my '97 900 SET. I
know Saab has made a lot of improvements 'under the skin', but most of the
advances in the last 5 years seem evolutionary, not revolutionary.

And just when I think I am out of the woods, yesterday I got rear-ended on
the freeway. A low-velocity collision that scratched my fender and damaged
my tailpipe. So it's off to the body shop I go! The other driver's
insurance will pay for a rental, but I am sure it won't be a Saab :-(
