One data point...  Six years ago I bought a 3-year used car extended
warranty from a Saab dealer along with my first Saab. It was backed by
'Ryan Warranty Services' and available in three coverage levels. There was
never any hassle about coverage. I could and did go to any dealer or shop
of my choice, they made a diagnosis, called Ryan for authorization, and did
the work on the spot. I ended up collecting an APC box, wheel bearings,
inner drivers, and various small parts, but the car turned out to be less
trouble than I had anticipated and I didn't quite break even on the cost.
When I bought the Saab, I had just doubled my money with an extended
warranty on a Ford AWD minivan; after owning the Saab for several years I
probably wouldn't go for extended warranty on another Saab. Spend some
money changing brake fluid and coolant and the like, and you probably won't
have any of the expensive failures.
