I have been running Amsoil synthetic oil in all my Saab engines and Redline
MTL in the transmissions since 1989 and would never go back to the old
lubs.

Aside from replacing the rear springs, you can find 'spacers' for the rear
springs from a company called SAS at: http://www.sasab.com/

I had the same battery draining experience in my 85 900S. The current
drain is intermittent and <extremely> hard to find. The solution that I
eventually settled for was to buy the biggest battery that would fit.
Unfortunately, there is less room in the Turbos for a big battery. My
current theory on the true source of the problem is that it is caused by
the engine cooling fan timer-relay. I traced a problem where the fans were
occasionally not comming on when needed to this relay, so I suspect that
they could be the mysterious source of battery drain. The relay lets the
fans run for a fixed amount of time after the engine is turned off--I
believe the 84 year had this relay. I bypassed the relay, but with my big
battery, I don't have a good test for the battery drain problem. Since
then, I have seen several others recommend bypassing this relay to prevent
overheating the engine. For more excellent information on maintaining your
Saab, preventing overheating and getting more power from your engine, see
the Townsend Imports web page at: http://www.townsendimports.com/
