Hey Saab List!
My Saab Lives! For those who have been waiting on pins and needles
to see if I would ever get my '81 900S to run again, you can rest easy.
I got my fuel pump and fuel distributor yesterday.
It seems to be running quite well, with one exception; some problems
with the idle. When I first started it after installing the new parts,
(used fuel pump, rebuilt distributor), it would not idle at all. I
turned up the idle to around 1000 rpm, by the dash tach, and it seemed
to do all right. Took it for a drive, and it tended to die at
intersections. I then adjusted the dashpot a little higher, and that
seemed to help, but would still intermittently die at intersections, but
would sit and idle in the driveway. When fully warm, idle dropped to
just a little less then 1000 rpm on the dash tach, and idle was just
ever so rough. I turned the idle up again to around 1,100 and it now
seems to be doing find. I'm a little concerned, because the Haynes
manual says idle should be 875 rpm. The idle screw and the dashpot are
nearly at the end of their adjustment.
A couple of other questions. On the fuel pump wiring harness, there
is a black lead and a red lead. I connected red to '-' and black to '+'.
The pump seems to run fine, but I want to make sure I've got it right.
Also, anyone have an idea about a metallic 'gurgling' sound coming from
the gas tank, after I shut off the ignition? The car never had this
sound before. Plugged tank vent maybe? Any ideas would be most welcome.
Thanks to all the list members who have helped with this adventure.
Also, thank you to Dario at the Saab Depot in Ontario Canada. Also
thanks to Jon at Autopartsgiant.
Happy Motoring!
