My 1989 9000cdt is serviced by a saab mechanic (out of hours) once a year
according to all the guidelines. Even not paying saab labour charges its
still pricey. This year I really cant afford it.

I wonder what I 'need' to do. An oil change and filter of course, check
fluid levels etc. I am mechanically minded, I maintain 2 cars from the
1960's (not saabs)but I have never really fancied working on a 'modern' car.
But, can I skip the proper service and just do the basics (anyone got any
extra suggestions on what to refill/change/throw away?)

It turned 100,000 miles yesterday so it has not got the mileage you might
expect for a 1989 car

thanks

nick
