You may have gotten plenty of answers on this by now - I'm behind in reading
my posts. It is possible to pull and swap the inner drivers 'in the car' in
the 99T, but not that easy. First, you have to separate the lower ball
joints on both sides, slide the rubber boots for the inner drivers outward
along the drive axles (clean them first), and pull the drive axles and
'tripod' out of the inner driver. The drivers are removed by unbolting the
carrier from the side of the transaxle housing and pulling the whole
carrier, bearing, and driver out (you may need to drain the transmission
first if you don't want a bath!). This process isn't too bad on the right
side, but it's a sumbitch on the left side. You have to work from
underneath the car, and if I recall, the left side drive axle wants to be in
the way the whole time.
Once you have the carriers out, you can remove the snap ring which holds the
driver in the carrier and push the driver out of the bearing. I strongly
recommend replacing the oil seals and the o-rings which seal the carriers to
the transaxle housing. (Of course, the only 99 gearbox which doesn't leak
oil is one which is already empty regardless of new seals.....) You may
also want to consider replacing the carrier bearings depending on mileage
and condition. I can't recall exactly, but I don't think you need a press
to get the driver out of the bearing. In any event, avoid pounding on any
bearing you plan to re-use!
After you've swapped everything, repack the drivers with CV joint grease
(yes, you've got to use the official stuff). I usually put plastic wrap
over the end and secure it with a rubber band until I've got everything in
place to keep grease in and dirt out. Putting the right side driver/carrier
back in is not too bad, but the left one is not so easy. You may need to
unbolt the left engine mount (take the nut off on the topside) and jack up
the engine/trans a little to get the thing in, or you may just need to apply
the proper expletives.
