Your alternator output should be higher about 13 - 14 volts. The charge
light on the dash is a part of the charging circuit. I believe it is a part
of the excitation side of the alternator. When the alt outputs exceeds
battery, then it is self excited and the light goes out. I thing the
regulator is on a small box on the backside of the alternator.

My 78 99 does the same thing with the light. When I first start it, it
glows and I tap the accel and it goes out.
