Reverse Shifter Linkage

I've got a 95 900S, 5 speed. Prior to that I had a 87 900S 5-speed.
So when I go for reverse, I'm used to going to 1st gear before
trying reverse to avoid the grinding.

My problem is not with grinding, but actually getting it into reverse.
My independent mechanic replaced the a piece of the linkage with a newer,
updated piece, and has since tightened it twice, but it still loosens up
over time. Occasionally, I have to shut off the engine and run it through
1st or 3rd a couple of times to get it into reverse. This usually manifests
itself at some inconvenient time like when making a 3 point turn on a busy
street.

While the car was under warranty, I asked the dealer to look into
the campaign for the linkage. I believe he said it didn't apply to
my car, but in any case, I did ask the dealer about it.

I've got about 85K on the car, and most of the driving is off-
highway.

Any thought or ideas on this topic would be greatly appreciated.
