Wheel and Tire upgrade

I've been thinking of upgrading the wheels and tires on my 9000 Aero.
In the end, though, what do I get for my $500 or so?

Here's my breakdown:

new wheels (17x7.5)
new tires (215/45)
sell old wheels
standard tires

The original tires are 205/50x16 and have a diameter of 16' + 205mm

The 215/45x17 are a little larger:

But what matters in the end is the contact patch which is 10mm wider
and possibly somewhat longer. For the sake of argument, say the
length of patch grows proportionately, so the entire patch is roughly
5% longer and 5% wider. This is a 10% increase in contact patch.

Is this analysis reasonable? In the end, $400 for a 10% performance
'improvement' isn't too bad - compare that against the $1000 cost for
15% more horsepower from Abbott Racing, and it seems pretty good
bargain. Of course, to use all that contact patch, you have to get
the Abbott upgrade too.
