In regard to the Fiat/Lancia/ 9000/Alfa debate, I think it is safe to say
that the Swedes and the Italians regard safety and performance in
different ways when they build automobiles. While the 9000 is an
excellent performing car, some examples of the Italian design school over
the years have illustrated this. In talking to Peter Salzer, former head
of PR at Saab Auto, about the origins of the 9000'CC' (hatch), he said
that Saab people went out to airports to look at Fiat Chromas and other
derivitives and found that, due to the lighter-gauge steel they were
using, many of them were experiencing severe rust problems. Sounds like a
case of poor corrosion protection to me, but reminds me of the Fiat 128 I
sold to the junkyard many years ago, due to rust. On one of our trips to
Road America a few years back, I saw a Lancia Thema in the paddock area
with 'Jack Brabham' across the top of the windshield and some serious
looking rubber on the car. This car of course was not officially
imported. I happened to be nearby when the car was started up..... wow.
That was no 2.0L Saab engine... obviously the Ferrari V8, and one without
much in muffling. It sounded more like one of the Cobras! Can you imagine
our 9000s sounding and performing like that? Yeeeow! Look out Bimmers!
However, I am happy to have my family in the 9000, for safety reasons
(and in light of the current gas prices).
