Noisy Transmission

I have a 89 9000T with 165K miles and a manual transmission. Lately, I
have noticed that when I am in gear and traveling forward in any speed but
1st, I heard this low pitched whir or whine. The noise increases as I go
faster in any gear. When I step on the clutch, it goes away. I really did
not think too much of it until a friend of mine (who owns a 90 9000) was in
the passenger seat and ask in surprise, 'What is that sound?' I read some
postings and I did the 'rolling down the hill in neutral with the engine
off test' and I did not hear the sound.
So now, I'm worried. Do I need to have the transmission rebuilt? If the
sound goes away when I step on the clutch, does that mean the clutch is in
working order? Do I take it to a transmission shop or an independent
mechanic? Your advice and guidance would be appreciated. If I need a
transmission, what am I likely to spend, rather what is the desired price?
If you respond to the list, please cc directly to me as well.
Thanks,
James Horan
