You can switch anytime. You can even mix. I know people who do 3 qts
synth (10W-30) and 1 qt straight weight dino (30W).

There can be a seal swell problem with older engines/gaskets, what was a
drip could now be a major leak.

I switched an 84M900T with 110,000 miles to synthetic about 2 years ago
(engine, tranny and power steering). No problems. I switched My 91
Rodeo with ~150,000 miles at the same time. The next day the Rodeo
dumped the entire PS fluid (engine & tranny have been fine), and
switching back to regular PS fluid has not fixed it...time for a
rebuild.
