Re: Reverse Shifting

Shifting into reverse can be quite annoying at times. Going to a forward
gear prior to attempting reverse is a good idea because you're using the
synchros and gears to make sure the pilot shaft is not spinning. But now,
the tranny is totally stationary. Sometimes, reverse gears won't go
because the tips of the teeth are hitting, rather than engauging in their
respective grooves. A Saab mechanic recommended this method to me: SLOWLY
release the clutch while shifting into reverse. You want to do this
carefully, just to the point of making the pilot shaft move slightly, NOT
engauging the clutch. If you get a grinding noise, you're letting the
clutch out too far. Another way is to slow to almost a full stop in a
forward gear. With the car BARELY MOVING, try to select reverse. If you
get a grind, you're moving too fast.
Either of these methods seem to work well for me.
