Front End Noise

Last fall a 'thoughtful person' in a '98 BMW 740i ran me and my brand new
9-5 off the road during the afternoon commute home. Among other things
this did nothing to raise my opinion of BMW car owners (apologies in
advance to any Bimmer owners on this list!).

During the road rage assault (I refuse to refer to the incident as an
'accident' since the other driver acted intentionally) my car went into a
dirt median and spun around and came to a rest (from an initial speed of
about 100 kmh). According to the body shop all the damage was 'cosmetic'
(and cost about $8k).

The cosmetic damage was all repaired and car is beautiful and shiny once
more. However a persistent front-end noise problem has arisen which my
dealer has been unable to rectify. They can reproduce the problem, but
they have not been able to figure out what the source of the noise is.

The noise is a clunking which occurs only when the vehicle is backing up
and turning (preferably to the right, but I don't think it matters). I
hear this every morning as I back out of my garage and turn around to drive
up the driveway. I can get it to happen anyplace and anytime. When it
first started it was intermittent but now it reliably clunks on every
reverse with a wheel turn.

Only having driven old 900s prior to the 9-5 my first thought was 'ball
joints.' The noise is exactly what used to develop in the 900 front end
when one or more ball joints wore out. The dealer says the ball joints are
fine on the 9-5. They have also retorqued everything in the front end. To
no avail.

Time, as they say, is money. So any help from the cognoscenti would be
appreciated!

TIA!
