Having spent some time in some old diesels (namely VW rabbits), I would be
likely to be down on them as well. Fortunately, my life was changed in
January with the purchase of a 2000 VW Turbo Direct Injection Diesel
Beetle. It has all of the acceleration of a regular gas engine (not even a
noticeable turbo lag) and is still very quiet. The best part is that it
get 50-60 mpg without additives and even better with them. I just drove
1800 miles across the country on three tanks of gas (about $60). You can't
do that anymore in even the best gas cars. Best of luck.
