'Vacuum' is the proper spelling.

Actuating the bypass valve will get you nothing on the wastegate. They
are: a) not interconnected, and b) operate on different principles.

With the motor off, there isn't much you can 'test' on the bypass valve
unless you remove it from the car so that you can see it's operation.
If it holds vacuum, it probably is working right. The wastegate needs
to be checked with pressure, not vacuum. If you have the MityVac that
does both, be sure to change whatever it is you change to get pressure
for testing the wastegate, and connect it to the wastegate. The
wastegate should open at about 5-6 PSI. The exact spec will be in the
manuals.

Check also that the gauge is working properly.
