Steering Stiffness and Clicking

I have a 1989 classic 900 with 116,000 miles. About 1.5-2 years ago I
replaced the lower U-joint with a part from a wreck, which fixed my
'stiff steering' problem. Now a similar problem has surfaced.

The steering wheel locked up a bit when I was cornering. I gave it a little
tug and heard a clicking/snapping sound that appeared to come from just
under the steering wheel, where it enters the dash board. The steering
wheel loosened up but from time to time I would hear this clicking/scraping
noise. After a few of these lock ups, I brought the car in for a check up.
The steering wheel was removed and no problems were found. They lubed some
bearing (?) that they could get at.

Upon cornering at slow speed (parking lot) there was a whole lot of
clicking/snapping/scraping coming from the same area. Now the steering is
uniformly stiff, as if I have lost some of the power assist steering. From
time to time I hear a clicking noise when turning. Note that this noise is
in the vicinity of the steering wheel/dash board, so it seems that the rack
is not the problem.

My mechanic suspects that I might have a bad steering column, but is a bit
leary of putting one in (will get a part from a wreck) because they seldom
fail and he is not convinced that is what the problem really is.

Any thoughts on this peculiar problem? It does not sound like a textbook
rack problem.
