White Smoke

I was recently cruising home in about 95 degree weather, bumper to bumper
traffic in my 1991 9000T (115k miles) when I noticed some white smoke
billowing up from my hood. I immediately checked my temperature (high but
not red), turned off my air conditioning, rolled down my windows and pulled
onto a side street to park. By the time I had a chance to park, found
something to keep my hands from getting burnt, and got the hood openned,
most of the smoke had dissipated. From what I could tell, it was coming
from about 6 inches behind the passenger side headlight. I've subsequently
discovered that if I turn off the air conditioning the car runs just fine.
With it on, however, it stalls constantly. I thought, at first, that it
might be a blown turbo, but I don't know why that would be affected by the
A/C. I would like to have an idea before I let the mechanic take a crack
it and any help would be greatly appreciated.
