Thanks to all who replied with respect to the above problem.
It ended up being a faulty ice (cold) sensor, which (on the V6) screws into
the cooling bridge that joins the cylinder heads. This was the expected
fault, given that cabin heat was OK (indicating that the thermostat was OK),
and it was confirmed when the OBDII scanner was hooked up. Amazingly, it's
only a CDN$20 part and is very straight forward to install (but having a
spare thumb to plug the hole and prevent too much coolant from escaping
while you remove the old and reach for the new sensor is *very* handy -
thanks Dad!).
