Re: 1984 900 Turbo

I recently got into a discussion with the owner of an Audi 5000 Turbo
regarding Bosch parts and their generic equivalents (I'm not against
using generics if the price is right)...

Anyway, he mentioned that using a non-OEM oil filter will waste the turbo
due to oil starvation... Is there any credence to this statement?

My folks bought this car in '84 - '85 and have *never* used OEM (Bosch)
oil filters - always used equivalents (Fram, etc.) and the wife and I
continue to use non-OEM filters to this day...

The turbo is functioning fine - I believe this is largely due to the fact
that we try to give this car regular oil changes so that the oil doesn't
sludge-up and block the oil feed line to the turbo (would this also help
reduce the chance of coking?)...

I'm thinking that it's okay to use non-OEM filters as long as regular oil
changes are performed, but I thought I'd better ask to make sure as I've
been wrong before...

BTW: Besides Bosch filters, what other brand/model of filter would y'all
recommend?

Thanks!

Terry Warren
