1996 NG 900SE turbo, 41K miles.

Car driven home on Friday with no signs of any problem and left in the
garage, unlocked, without the antitheft actuated. Tried to start it Sunday
and nothing happened when I turned the key. The check transmission light
stayed on and there was a buzzing sound when placed in gear, no sound when in
neutral or park. Monday, as a last ditch effort before towing to the
mechanic, cycled the remote locking/anti-theft several times (car was left
since Friday unlocked). Car turned over, though a bit slower than normal, but
started just fine. Drove it around and all seemed okay. Took it to my
mechanic and he checked battery condition with a load tester and the
alternator and all was on the strong side of normal. This morning, tried to
start it again. Car turned over but the starter motor gave out a high
pitched, teeth rattling whine, as it turned the engine over. Whine was so
unnerving did not let it turn over long enough to actually start.

I've had a number of starter motors fail over the years but never one that
made such a teeth jarring whine like this. Is it time for a new starter???

I live on an Island, two hundred miles across the Pacifc from an approved
dealer with the full diagnostic test equipment so towing it to a dealer is
not an option. Have a competent Volvo mechanic who works on Saabs by
default, hey they are both made in Sweden. Unfortunately, he doesn't have
Saab specific test equipment beyond OBDE II, or whatever the standard
electrickery diagnostics are.

Mahalo in advance for any ideas. Hope its not the demise of the anti-theft
circuit board as I hear it's a very expensive, dealer only, installation.

Mahalo in advance for any ideas/help.

Aloha
Peter O.
