I missed the original question, but I consider winter tires a necessity for 
myself.  I prefer to have tires that are the best choice for the driving 
conditions, so that I can maximize the potential (and my fun) of the car.

All-season tires (their very name should indicate that) are a compromise.  
Front-wheel drive, TCS, and ESP, combined with improved all-season tire 
technology allows our SAAB's to be very capable winter performers.  But I 
want to drive an exceptional performer, one that with few peers.  Dedicated 
high-performance summer tires, and dedicated high-performance (relatively 
speaking) winter tires allows me this level of driving capability.

With my summer tires, I'm sure I've left a lot of 'sports-car drivers' 
wondering how that station wagon did that, and in snow conditions, I'm 
constantly zipping around lumbering SUV's and other 4/AWD's.  We saw a lot of 
snow last winter, and I never even used the 'Winter' mode on the AW-5.
