Coolant Reservoir Oil & Gas Tank Gurgle

Hey Saab List,
    Well, for better or worse, I've acquired another Saab 900S. This car
was abandoned at a local hotel, and after unsuccessful attempts to
contact the owners (by the hotel and me), the hotel gave me permission
to remove the vehicle. It's a silver '83, with the clock showing 123k. I
spoke with the tow truck driver who towed the car and owner in, and he
said the guy thought it was a bad timing chain. I checked the oil, and
it looks milky to me. I also note that the coolant reservoir is empty. I
also note that the engine seems to be covered in oil. From this, I am
thinking blown head gasket.
    Since I don't have a key yet, and I'm beginning the process of
getting a title, I'm not really planning on doing much with this car for
a little while. Has anyone on the list ever replaced a head gasket on an
old 8 valve? Anything to watch out for? This car is also an auto stick.
Is this a reliable transmission? My plan is either to get the car
running and sell it, or give it to a friend.
    Update on my '81 900S; I note that the metallic gurgling sound from
the gas tank happens even if you turn the key to the start position and
then off without cranking the engine. Ring any bells with anyone?
