Clutch Master Repair Leftover Part

I changed the clutch master on my 89 9000.

I worked from above and could only feel (not see) the two studs the
cylinder fits to. There was a small metal plate on the upper stud
(about 5x 2 cm and shaped). This didnt seem to fit in any particular
direction and was interfering with my refitting the cylinder (I could
only get one hand into the area) so I took it off.

Its not mentioned in the haynes manual, so I wonder what its purpose
is. Does anyone know?

I also did not replace the gasket which was beyond saving. I need the
car right now and that gasket will take a few weeks to source.
Presumably the gasket stops water trapping between cylinder and
bulkhead abd causing rust. Should I be concerned about it for the
time being?

The clutch, btw, now works fine.

Thanks

Nick
