Steering Stiffness and Clicking

For the past couple of years, I noticed (when the weather is cold) that
the steering would be stiff when I start the car ('86 9000T), but would
loosen up once the car was warmed up.  Lately, the stiffness seems to be
getting more severe and just last week I noticed a clicking sound when I
turn the steering wheel.  I usually hear a louder click while turning to
the left compared to the right.  Also, while turning to the left, I hear
two clicks before a complete (max) turn of the steering wheel.  The
clicks appear to come from somewhere under the dashboard or just beyond.

Should I check into it ASAP, or can I afford to wait until it gets worse
(don't want to get stuck on the highway with my steering column locked!)
Am I looking at a steering rack replacement?  (I hope not!) Any insights
would be greatly appreciated!
