Re: Heavy Clutch

It's certainly true that different makes of cars/trucks require different
amounts of clutch pedal effort.

Even in different model-year 9000 cars, the difference can be quite
extreme.

We have an '88 9kS with what seems to be the original clutch (except for a
rebuilt/replaced master cylinder) which requires a LOT of effort to
operate.

I put a new clutch into an '86 9kT. This one had a new pressure-plate that
differed substantially from the original one in the attachment and pivoting
of the spring-fingers. After the swap, the pedal effort was noticeably
reduced.

Our '93 9kCSET has a dramatically lighter clutch pedal. This definitely
has something to do with the complete redesign of the master-cylinder
setup. Starting with '90 models, the new master is placed behind and to
the side of the pedal, while earlier models have an old style master
mounted vertically in the 'aquarium' - false-bulkhead partition area -
firewall.

My wife was afraid whe might have damaged pedal/floor in the '93 when she
first got in and stomped the clutch down - with the force normally required
on the '88 !

Overall, the UK-made pressure plates that are sold as replacement parts by
SAAB provide the best feel and lightest effort available. Don't cheap out
by saving $50 and ending up with an inferior aftermarket part (Sachs). For
pretty much all C900 cars, go with the latest model turbo clutch kit ('93)
for best feel. For 9k cars, follow the part numbers in the EPC, where I
think there is currently only one B202 turbo clutch, one non-turbo clutch
for both B202 and B234, and one B234 turbo clutch. Don't know about NG900,
9-3, 9-5 or any B204 9k cars.
