Not true. Throughout the years, all of the possible five engine variants
were available in 9000 cars that wore the 'CSE' badge. Read on...

This is *NOT* true. For whatever reason, they don't know how to (or don't
care to) read a SAAB VIN, and/or have no idea what SAAB's different engine
codes mean. Read on...

That's a bogus chart ! Here's what engines were sold in USA 9000 cars:

1993 CS/CSE standard:
B234I 150hp non-turbo engine with Bosch LH2.4.2 fuel system and SAAB Direct
Ignition (DI) system.

1994 CS/CSE standard:
B234I 150hp non-turbo engine with SAAB trionic fuel/ignition system.

1993-1994 CS/CSE optional:
B234L 200hp (Garrett T25) turbo engine with SAAB trionic fuel/ignition
system.

1995-1997 CS standard:
B234E 170hp (Garrett T25) turbo engine with SAAB trionic fuel/ignition
system.

1995-1997 CSE standard:
B234L 200hp (Garrett T25) turbo engine with SAAB trionic fuel/ignition
system.

1995-1997 CSE optional:
B308I 210hp non-turbo V6 engine with Bosch Motronic fuel/ignition system.

1993-1997 Aero automatic:
B234L 200hp (Garrett T25) turbo engine with SAAB trionic fuel/ignition
system.

1993-1997 Aero 5-speed:
B234R 225hp (Mitsubishi TD04) turbo engine with SAAB trionic fuel/ignition
system.

1998 CSE automatic:
B234L 200hp (Garrett T25) turbo engine with SAAB trionic fuel/ignition
system.

1998 CSE 5-speed:
B234R 225hp (Mitsubishi TD04) turbo engine with SAAB trionic fuel/ignition
system.

The engine codes in the above descriptions break down as follows:

B = Gasoline-burning

20 = 2.0-liter displacement
23 = 2.3-liter displacement
30 = 3.0-liter displacement

1 = 4-cylinder in-line 8-valve with one overhead camshaft.
2 = 4-cylinder in-line 16-valve with two overhead camshafts.
4 = 4-cylinder in-line 16-valve with two overhead camshafts and two balance
shafts.
8 = V6 24-valve with two overhead camshafts per cylinder bank.

I = non-turbo
E = light-pressure turbo
L = full-pressure turbo
R = specially-tuned maximum-power turbo variant

Only the B234R engine was equipped with the Mitsubishi TD04 turbocharger.
This applies *only* to 1993-1997 Aero 5-speed cars and 1998 CSE 5-speed
cars.

> My VIN is YS3CF68M6V1013660.

One purpose of the VIN is to eliminate confision about a car's major
features and specifications. Every SAAB dealer should know that your engine
type is indicated by the 8th character of the VIN. Likewise every SAAB
dealer should have access to some form of cross-reference document (printed
or electronic), and should be able to use it to match the 8th VIN character
to a more meaningful engine code. Furthermore, they should know at least
approximately what each engine code *means*.

Your VIN indicates the following:

YS3 = SAAB - Sweden
C = 9000 model
F = Model series III - Dual Airbags
6 = 5-door 'CS'-body
8 = 4-speed automatic transmission
M = B234L 200hp engine
6 = Check digit
V = Model-year 1997
1 = Assembled on line 'A' in Trollhattan, Sweden
013660 = This was the thirteen thousand six hundred sixtieth vehicle to roll
off the abovementioned assembly line for the abovementioned model-year.

Here are all the engine codes that apply to USA 9000 CSE cars:

B = B234I 150hp
U = B234E 170hp
M = B234L 200hp
W = B308I 210hp
R = B234R 225hp

Clearly, the 8th character of your VIN is an *M*. This means that your car
has a *B234L* engine. All B234L engines that SAAB ever built were equipped
with a Garrett T25 turbocharger, and had a rated power output of 200hp. The
SAAB part number for the 1994-1997 B234L turbocharger is 91 46 051. The
SAAB retail price for this turbocharger should be in the neighborhood of
$800, not including the labor required to remove the old one and install the
new one.

> The 'Model Info' on www.saabnet.com states the CSE came with 200 hp.

It does say that in the 1996 and 1997 documentation, but the CSE model was
available in the USA from 1993 through 1998.

> I suppose it is possible that the original Mitsu. TD04 was replaced with
>a Garrett TB25. Please tell me what you think.

Impossible. No 1997 9000 CSE ever rolled off the boat on this side of the
Atlantic with a TD04 under the hood.
