Re: 9-5 Rear Speakers & Snow Tire Size

On the question of speaker quality in the 9-5 I think there are TWO
situations.

The Saab 9-5 SE has an excellent audio setup especially considering that it
is born that way.

HOWEVER the original sender of this thread is quite correct when talking
about the other (lower) 9-5's.

I have a 1999 9-5 (not an SE) and the front speakers are quite good and
well worth retaining BUT the speakers in the rear doors are absolutely junk
and an insult to the half-way interested audiophile. There are no
rear-shelf speakers at all in this model and the only sound coming from the
rear is in the doors and they are very poor. No amount of manipulation
with the fader controls will make lousy speakers (or no speakers) into
quality hifi.

I almost cancelled my purchase of this car when it arrived. Unfortunately,
I could not afford the SE model just to get the better audio system. I was
told that there were speaker wires to the back shelf - there are none. I
then went to my nearest capital city and toured the Saab dealers armed with
some good music source material. The audios in all the SE's were good and
all the lesser 9-5's were awful when the rear speakers were concerned. My
car was not a dud, all this model were poor in the rear sound.

I took my car to a decent car audio centre to make sure of my situation and
they confirmed with words of 'you can be proud of the front - pity about
the rear'.

I keep my cars a long time - I have currently a'85 900i no39sdcx6spamx782 465000km and a
'89 9000t no39sdcx6spamx782 300000km. The thought of having to put up with a half-way good
audio system for 10years plus is a difficult pill to swallow.

The head unit and amplifier on the lesser 9-5 model are adequate, it is
just the rear speakers that let the whole thing down. It would not have
cost Saab very much at all to put something worthwhile in the rear. Saab
have a lot to answer in making an upgrade path so damn difficult to
anything better.

I can't wait until my car comes out of warranty and I can put some decent
high quality speakers in the rear doors atleast and then figure out the
best way to load up the rear shelf. I would also like to find a way to
integrate a minidisc player as well.

Has anyone performed the necessary magic and upgraded the lesser 9-5 audio
to the better SE system?? or other changes to the better??

I recently drove a 2001 9-5 (not SE) and the rear speaker were only
marginally better.
