Re: Turbo Conversion

For the classic 900, the only 1987 16 valve normally aspirated model
offered was a 900S. I know because we ordered one. The base model had
the 8 valve engine. Unless you enjoy the idea of 'passive restraint'
harnesses (i.e. the motorized shoulder harness...), I would steer clear
of a 1987 900S. This was the model that Saab chose to offer the passive
restraints on (this was pre air-bag days) to comply with the Fed's rules
here in the USA. The base model and turbos have conventional harnesses.

Not sure if 88's had motorized belts on the 900S, and I believe 89 on up
had air bags. My suggestion would be to continue to look for a turbo.
The c900 models looked the same from '87 to 1993, and the rag top in
'94. There seem to be plenty of 3 door turbos for sale here in the
Northeast...

To answer your original ? about converting...the engines are basically
the same, so a 16V engine can be turbo'd. But it's not just
turbo/intake. The distributors are unique (our 900S has no vacuum adv.
unit--the turbos did), and I'm sure the ECM is specific for the turbo.
Also associated wiring harnesses...like I said, I think I'd just hunt
for a turbo car. Also, the turbo clutch/PP are heavier duty, along with
at 'least' the output drivers on the transaxle. A turbo engine will
wear these components sooner due to the add'l power. Oh, don't forget
the heat shield for the battery, etc, etc.
