Re: Valve Clatter

The clattering you hear from the top of the motor is most likely the
hydraulic lifters. Usually, this will clear up after a while. If it
does not, there are a few things to try:

1) Flush the motor. Here in the USA, they make a product called
'Engine Flush' which is basically some solvents that you add to the
crankcase of the motor, run the motor for a few minutes (idling,
don't drive it), then drain. It is supposed to get rid of all the
problems. I've used a quart of Diesel fuel to much the same effect.

2) try a thinner oil. If you are using anything 'heavier' than 10W30,
then switch to that.

3) remove the valve cover, and replace the seals on the oil pipes.
Early 16v heads used external oil pipes on the top of the cam bearing
caps to distribute oil to the cams and to the lifters. Later (mid
1988 model year) heads had these pipes removed, and a passage cast
and drilled into the head. Much more reliable, if slightly more prone
to air entrapment (not a big worry, though). The seals usually come
on the plastic fittings, which you also replace. Now is also a good
time to check the timing chain tension. I don't think you can run the
motor with the valve cover off, because the valve cover holds the
pipes onto the cam bearing caps.

If doing all this doesn't change the sound, then the timing chain
tensioner may be bad. They get to the end of their useful life about
at the mileage your car has on it. Also, check carefully the guides
for the chain. These get grooves worn in them, and this also lets the
chain rattle loosely in the block.

Working on the 16v head poses no real problems other than having
twice as many valves, and thus expense. You do not need to check
clearances, so you don't need that box of shims!
