Inconsistent Non Start

About three weeks ago I went out to my garage to start my 98 900S (turbo)
to go to work (temp in garage around 20f). It wouldn't start...cranked
over fine, but no hint of any cylinder trying to light off. Didn't know
what to do, since these 'wonderful' high tech ignition cassettes and
electronic fuel injection don't give you any quick, easy way to check
things out. However, I decided to try pouring maybe a thimble full of
gasoline into the intake pipe at the turbo-bypass valve. The engine
started! Ran fine right away and has ever since...until this morning (Jan
2). Same problem occured...cranked over fine, but no hint of any
cylinders firing off. Tried the thimble full of gasoline again, but this
time it didn't help...engine still wouldn't start! Decided further effort
was fruitless, so told wife I'd have to take her car and drop her off at
her job. Maybe 10 minutes later she was ready to go and came out to
garage. Decided then to have her turn the key while I listened at the
rear of the car to see if I could hear the fuel pump start/run. Well, the
engine started and ran just fine! And stared up just fine tonight.

Anyone out there have any idea what might be wrong or know of some simple
checks one can make when this happens to help find the problem? What
signal or sensor is used to start the fuel pump once engine starts
cranking? The car doesn't seem to have a fuel pump relay like the older
900's had. It would seem to me that at least part of problem is that fuel
is not being injected when the engine is cranking over, since when it does
start it runs smooth as normal (if the fuel was being injected but spark
plugs not firing, the engine would get flooded and run rough till excess
fuel used up). When I first had this problem I put a note on the Bulletin
Board. I got a response that, after a cold soak, the injection 'puffs' a
squirt of fuel into the intake manifold when the drivers door is opened. ??
I've ordered a fuel injection section of the service manual in hopes it'll
help find the problem.

This kind of crap makes me appreciate the points & condensor ignition and
simple carb of my 36 year old Rambler! :)
