My son's 84 900T had afuel smell on two occasions. The first sounds more like
your problem. We traced the fault to a tube that reroutes vapor from the tank
to the charcoal canister. There is a small metal device that has about 3
connectors for tubing located inside the right rear bodywork behind the trim
and at about the level of the top of the rear seat. This is in a 4 door.(I'm
writing from memory of something that happened several years ago). One of the
tubes had come off and fuel vapor was leaking into the car. Once it was
re-connected the smell went away. The other time fuel was leaking into the
trunk around one of the hoses that enter the fuel tank on the right. That
time gas was visible in the trunk well.

Good luck

Geoff Barst
