Idiot Light

My '88 9000S's 'Check Engine' light has recently started (intermittantly)
exhibiting a strange behaviour.  We all know why they are called idiot
lights, but there is no information on this in the owner's manual...
Occasionally, while driving, the light will start blinking in a series of
four blinks.  If I accelerate, it stays steady, and when decelerating, it
goes back to the 'four blink' patter, but much faster than with a 'normal'
load.   The first thing that comes to mind is a vacuum problem, but not
knowing what is in that system, I'm at a loss.   The car still gets its
normal 20-25 mpg, and everything else appears to be normal.   Any
sugesstions?
