Wrong. - from 1959 to 1999 the Mini manual transmission lived in
the engine oilpan directly under the crankshaft, driven by a set of spur
gears which whined and chattered as they aged. The original decision was
said to be forced by the need to use parts from existing models, and to
minimise drivetrain length (car width). Although an affront to purists, the
arrangement was so satisfactory that it was kept for the Mini's big brother,
the 1100/1300 series which was produced in large numbers through the early
seventies. Incidentally the arrangement required an ingenious twist on the
clutch layout.
