As far as synthetics are concerned they are all pretty good now. The one that
I have been using in my vehicles (all makes, SAAB included) is Amsoil. I have
achieved over 220K miles with original turbo and motor untouched using their
10w30 turbo oil. Also, their oilf filters are superior, filtering to much
better particle size retention than any commercially available product. And
in my one (currently) remaing classic 900 I have installed a remote
filtration system including a bypass filter (as opposed to full-flow) which
filters down to less than one micron particle size. For my money it's
synthetic oils and the best filtration I can get. There's no question.
Dinosaur oil doesn't cut it. I recognize that this is not specific
information to the 9-5 question, but motors are motors after all.

I used Castrol Syntec (10W-30W) for 250,000 miles on my '93 Aero and was 
quite satisfied with the results.  I recommend that you stick to Saab's 
recommendation regarding oil change intervals though.
