Water Pump

Just fixed a similar leak in my 1995 900S last weekend. On mine it was =
leaking at the o-ring on the aluminum tube that goes between the water =
pump and the cylinder block. This tube is an aluminum casting that is =
coated on the inside, (possibly a hard anodize?), presumably to prevent =
corrosion. However, the outside of the tube, which has grooves for the =
o-rings, is left unplated. A small amount of corrosion was starting to =
form along the o-ring groove on the cylinder block side. Corrosion is =
always likely occur at the point where dis-similar metals meet in the =
cooling system. I had bought new o-rings in advance, and since I was =
doing this on a Sunday, and I needed the car to get to work on Monday, I =
just cleaned up the corrosion and replaced the o-rings. If the leak =
re-appears in the future, I will certainly replace that tube.

If it's the original pump, probably not a bad idea at all. The pulley on =
my original pump literally disintegrated at 38,300 miles, leaving me =
stranded. I was told this was a defect of sorts on the pumps used in the =
1994 and 1995 models. I was also told that the replacement pump should =
have a yellow dot of paint on the pulley to signify that is was the 'new =
style', as the pump I bought from my local Saab dealer did. I only paid =
$115.00 for a new Saab pump in July of 1999. If you are going to replace =
the pump, I'd suggest getting a price from your local Saab dealer's =
parts department, and also inquire as to whether it is new or =
re-manufactured. I can't help you with which brands of aftermarket pumps =
are best, but if a Saab pump is still reasonable, I'd personally go with =
that. The Saab pump comes with (3) o-rings, two for the aluminum =
connector tube and one for the tube going to the heater core. The p/n on =
my reciept is 88-22-793. (Remember, mine is a 1995).

Good Luck,
Jim
