Re: 1984 900 Turbo

First, many thanks go out to all of you who answered my call for
assistance regarding this issue...

I tore the master cyl apart and cleaned it out the best I could using
heavy-duty solvent degreasers and a device I put together using a wood
dowel, velcro, and a piece of 220-grit wet/dry sandpaper...

The bore is shot. The only noticeable rust was on the lip of the end
where the piston goes in. But, there are 2 rather HUGE pits along the
'bottom'-side of the bore (if that makes sense) - These pits happen to
coincide with the location of the rubber plunger caps on the piston.
People have mentioned that pitting is caused by corrosion - Could
corrosion cause such *Large* pitting? It looks more like someone attacked
the bore with a small chisel and a mallet...

Anyway, time was an issue here and, even though the MC will need to be
replaced with a new unit, the primary concern here was simply to get the
car home as it is sitting some distance away at a friend's house... I
opted to go ahead and get the rebuild kit in the hopes that I could make
this thing useable enough to get the car home... I figured it would take
less time to get the rebuild kit than it would to get the MC - Now, I'm
not so sure...

Getting the rebuild kit turned out to be a hassle - I went to the local
Checker and ordered kit #071-7503 (Beck Arnley). Their computer listed a
higher price than that posted on the PartsAmerica Web site, but they sold
it to me at the lower price anyway... They then told me it would be a
week before it would come in as they had to order it directly from Beck
Arnley... 2 weeks later, I finally get it - It had gotten lost
en-route... Remind me to *not* go through Checker for the new MC...

John Francis suggested soaking the rubber plunger caps (rings?) in brake
fluid prior to installation - An excellent idea!! Worked wonderfully -
Thanks John!! I also coated the inside of the bore with brake fluid prior
to reassembly...

I'm going to try to get the car home either today or tomorrow - Wish me
luck!! I've also got to do some shopping around for a new MC, if anyone
can steer me in the direction of someone who has one of these 'reasonably
priced', it would save me some time and would be greatly appreciated...

Again, Thanks!
