I recently replaced the turbo on my 93 9000CDE and did it myself.  Was 
relatively easy job, altho it took me most of a day to do iy.  My turbo had 
stuck (wasn't turning), not smoking.  Miles at failure was around 80,000.  
Very irritating, as turbo in 86 900 went 200,000+.

I got a reman unit from Saab, list price about $850 plus $450 core charge 
(!!!!).  Priced a unit from an aftermarket supplier (don't remember the name, 
but think I found it on web and/or thru Saabnet links) but it was a bit 
higher in price.  Check with somw of the Saabnet sponsors/links, maybe you 
can get a discount (I got about a 20% discount from local dealer).  This 
after market supplier did offer bearing kits and a turbo 'module' kit 
(bearing housing with compressor/turbine wheel assembly..but w/o compressor 
or exhaust scrolls).  These would  have been cheaper  but I wasn't sure what 
had actually failed in my turbo and I didn't want to have the car out of 
service for more than a day. I don't think going with a used one would be 
wise.

Are you sure it's the turbo causing the smoke?  Don't know how you would 
check it out, except maybe look for excessive oil or carbon build up in 
exhaust side of turbo (I think the boost pressure keeps the oli from leaking 
out into the turbo inlet).
