Replacement Windshield Quality

Does anyone have thoughts about windshield quality?

After 108K I replaced my windshield (presumably the original) because of
pitting, scratches, and sandblasting (New England winters). In the 108K
miles, the windshield had suffered one 'star ding'. Now, 3 weeks with the
new windshield, I have one seven inch pebble-caused crack and one star ding.

Is this bad luck or a reflection of the quality of the replacement
windshield? As I have to replace the windshield I'm hope to not make the
same mistake twice (if, indeed it was a mistake).

Can anyone recommend windshield replacement service in, or around, Palo
Alto CA?
