That would be the pinion bearing, and transmissions from around 1991 on use
a larger pinion bearing.

The pinion bearing installation requires some very precise setting. There
are special tools for performing this, but very experienced rebuilders are
able to accomplish the setting 'by feel.' It is not impossible, or even
particularly difficult, but it does require some specialized knowledge and
procedures. If you are interested, start by purchasing the transmission
section of the Factory shop manual and read the procedures. Then ask
yourself, 'do I feel lucky...'
