Having been a Classic 900 fanatic and now having also been a 9-3 owner, I
can tell you that the 9-3 is a classic 900 in disguise, but better.

>Is the lip of the hatch still low,

These are good questions. The first thing I did in 1994 when the 900 was
redesigned was to open the hatch and see if it was still flat from the bumper
all the way to the front seats. It wasn't. The opening of the hatch was higher
than the floor of the rear, so you'd have to drop something in instead of
sliding it, and there was this big hump in the middle. I sniffed, like many
others, labelling it 'un-Saab'. How silly, really. The hatch in the 9-3
is cavernous - there is so much space. It's not like our 83 or 90 900
hatchbacks, but what we give up in sliding ability, we get back 10 times in
better driving with car being more rigid from front to back and across. If
you've only ever driven classic 900's, you've got to get behind the wheel
of a 9-3. Now that I have one 9-3, I have to admit I want to replace both of
my classic 900's with 9-3 hatchbacks.
