High Fan

I am having problems with the heater in my 1989 Saab 9000 CD. The fan is
always on high regardless of what setting I put it on. I can never
completely shut the heater off. If I hold the auto button and the vent
button in for a second or two, '88' starts to blink in the temperature area.
The '88' blinks for about 15 - 20 seconds and then a '2' shows up in the
temperature area.

I had a part replaced (don't know what one) it was a 3inch by 2inch
(roughly) gray piece that was by the firewall on the passengers side. I was
then able to change fan speeds for about 2 weeks. During this time when I
held in the auto & vent buttons the '88' changed to a 1.

Is there some basic functionality I am unaware of? I would appreciate the
help greatly!

Thanks,
Joe Van Derven
