Re: Tire Pressure Mystery

If the tires are rated at a higher-than-normal max pressure, it is reasonable
to increase the normal pressure accordingly. The tires' load and speed
capacity are based on that max pressure, and a significant reduction of
pressure will correspondingly decrease the load and speed at which the tire
will start to overheat and do bad things like tread separation.

In general, higher pressure will give a rougher ride, but better dry-road
performance. There may be a point beyond which the smaller footprint (at
higher pressure) will result in a wet-road tradeoff, but I don't know if
that's significant in the range we're discussing.

The other potential problem with overinflation is premature wear in the
center of the tread. This is minimized with radial tires (especially
low-profile tires), so I don't know if it will be a factor.

The low-profile tires on my Passat are rated at 42 PSI. I rune them at 35,
instead of the 28-30 called for on the sticker on the car.
