Idle Surge-Stall & Error Codes

I am having a problem with my 1990 Saab 9000S.
When I start it, the engine revs to over 2000 rpm for a few seconds, then
drops below 600 rpm and then stalls. Sometimes it will catch itself before
stalling and shoot back up to 2000 rpm again and keep repeating this cycle.

Also (and possibly related), the check engine light has been on for months
but I don't know how to output the error codes. Can someone help me here?

I am guessing there could be an air leak in the induction system that is
confusing the fuel metering system. Are there any common failure points
where leaks occur?

Paul
