The only changes absolutely necessary are to the front mounting and
the shifter. The transmission in a 99 has a cast-in flange to mount
the transmission (and hence the motor) to the chassis. The 900 uses a
bolt-on mounting.

There is a problem, though. The early chain-drive 99 transmission
covers will not work on a 5-speed. There is some part of the casting
that is wrong, and all the fluid will leak out. However, as I
understand it, if you have a 1980 or later 99, the front cover of the
4-speed will work on a 5-speed with no troubles.

The other problem is the shifter itself. There is a white plastic bit
on the bottom of the shifter housing. this needs to be replaced with
the appropriate piece from a 5-speed, else you will not get into 5th.

The final thing to consider is centering. Saab used two centering
mechanisms in the Classic 900. The first involved a shift rod with a
square on it and rollers & springs to bring the shift lever into the
3-4 gate if you just let go of it, and it's not in any gear.

The second, and more desirable arrangement, is the 'internal'
mechanism. This puts a spring on the shifter shaft inside the gearbox.

You will probably need to switch to the later 900 style shift
coupler. The 99 coupler is a fixed size, but the 900 style allows
adjustment via a collar & clamp.

Good luck!
