Motor Mounts Break In

I had the lower motor mounts on our 1986 9000T (with 400,000 + km)
replaced. When I picked the car up the vibration from the engine
resonated throughout the entire body of the car. The seats vibrated
and it was like sitting in a drum. I took the car back the next day
and told the shop that the vibration was intolerable and that
something like the exhaust must be hitting a chassis member or
something. They checked and found nothing wrong so they suggested
that the new motor mounts were so stiff that they were transmitting
the vibration. Maybe the mounts needed to break in? So we drove the
car over Christmas and put a couple of thousand kilometres on the it.
While the vibration has lessened it is still irritating under certain
conditions (especially deceleration). It typically seems to be worst
when cold (-20 C).

My questions: Do motor mounts really need to break in? If so, how
long until they're good? Can motor mounts be defective? (These are
after market mounts, not OEM)

Thanks for any help you can provide!
