Here is my take on oil changes (and always change the oil filter along with
the oil).
If you use standard petroleum oil - 3,000 miles between changes.
If you use synthetic oil, and do mainly city or stop and go driving - 5,000
miles between changes.
If you use synthetic oil and drive mainly freeway - 10,000 miles between
changes.

My last SAAB was purchased new in 1984 and driven 242,000 miles with out
ever having the engine opened for anything other than the occasional valve
adjustment (solid lifters in the old 8V engines). When it was rear-end and
totaled in 1997 by drunk driver, the car still had the original
turbocharger, transmission, etc. and was driven 20,000 miles a year as my
daily transportation.

I always used Mobil 1 synthetic oil and changed the oil and filter every
5,000 miles. Maybe it was luck, but it worked for me.
