Don't worry, it's not terrible at all.

There's a little plastic clip/pivot under the rear door lock button. It's
supposed to translate up/down motion of the button into fore/aft motion of a
metal rod. Sometimes the whole mechanism (behind the outside door handle)
gets a little sticky, resulting in your current condition. You can buy a new
plastic pivot from your SAAB dealer (part number 92 66 644). I would not
recommend a junkyard for this part, because it's nearly impossible to get
these pivots out of the door without breaking them.

I suppose that your central locking (or at least the actuator in that rear
door) doesn't work either then. Because if it does, you'd find that the
central locking system still locks and unlocks that door, even if the manual
button doesn't do anything.

> is it feasible to go into the door by removing trim etc,

Sure is. Just remove the interior door trim and you'll see the situation.
Pull on the horizontal lock rod (like what the downward motion of the button
would normally do) and the door will be locked.
