Both the Beetle and the PT Cruiser evoke memories of the past,
resurrect popular forms, give us a bit of nostalgia, and at the same
time update the engineering for today.

The original Beetle was an inexpensive car, sold in very high numbers
(I'm not sure Saab has ever sold as many total cars as VW sold of the
original Beetle) and became a symbol of its time.

The old Deuce Coupes and their ilk that the PT Cruiser reminds us of
are from a slightly different age, and more about the 'hot rod'
culture than bringing back any one particular model.

Saabs have never been popular enough that their cars mean much to
most people who are not already Saab owners. Saabs have always been
looked on as unusual, 'niche' cars where form followed function above
all else.

Bringing back the design of the old 92001, or the production 92
wouldn't help Saab to expand their market, which is their primary
goal now. Sure, a few thousand people would go in for a 'retro' Saab
like the really early cars, but that's not quite enough to spend the
money on the tooling and engineering.
