Frankly, my personal feeling is that you cannot afford to NOT pay the $50
or so for the Bentley manual. It is so much superior to the Chilton's, and
you may find that the $30-40 difference in price is paid for the first time
you use it, through time saved, better understanding of your car, and doing
a proper repair.

If you have to ride your bike for a week or two, so you can use the unspent
gas money on the Bentley manual, do it. :)

What year is your 900? With respect to the idle, I could swear that on my
'90 900 adjusts the idle speed automatically to account for extra
alternator load. For sure my wife's '87 Nissan 200SX does -- I was just
checking that the other day. 850 rpm without electrical load, 1000 rpm
with.

Maybe the earlier models don't do this? The Bentley manual probably has
something to say about this. :)

I had a bright idea...go read my Bentley manual. So I just did. On '88
and later models ('89 and later for Turbos), the idle control is fully
automatic. Between '86 and '89 for Turbos, the system is partly automatic,
but there's still a manual adjustment for idle. The manual describes in
detail how to make that adjustment.

The manual doesn't cover pre-'85 cars, but I assume that there is no
automatic idle control for those years.

So one thing to make sure is that if you have a model year that is supposed
to use the automatic idle control, that should be taking care of the load
issues, and you shouldn't have to mess with the idle.

Pete
